Act Now!

By franjex · Comments (0)

Only when the last fish has been caught
Only when the last tree has been cut down
Only when the last river has been poisoned
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten…

All around us is evidence of this terrible American Indian prophecy becoming true, as our rivers become more and more filthy, we destroy our beautiful grasslands to grow trees for paper, our forests are invaded by slash and burn farmers who decimate the land.

No farmer would ever allow overstocking on his lands, but we have already overstocked and overconsumed our earth’s carrying capacity, and who dares to stop us?

Except Earth herself, when she has had enough of us: – we will die of disease as we become resistant to antibiotics, starve as we destroy our soil, kill our seas with oil and sewerage and plastic.

Do you really want to wait until earth gets rid of you?  or do you want to start now and quickly, to make some changes?

Most people now live in cities, with no concept of water shortages, polluted rivers, droughts, -you throw away your rubbish with no idea of what ‘away’ means.  Until the day you turn on your tap and there is no water – how long would it take without being able to flush your toilet before you were sorry you didnt take more care of our water resources?

Join me now, sign up on my blog for go green tips, start making easy changes to your habits, and if everyone does it, those small changes will add up to massive savings for our earth.  You CAN make a difference!

Poisoned Water

Polluted River

Umvoti River 18 Sept 2010

Are you Poisoning your Water?

Only when the last fish has been caught
Only when the last tree has been cut down
Only when the last river has been poisoned
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten…

We have all heard this American Indian prophecy so many times, but at this moment it seems that it is coming to pass.
We have all heard that the next major war will be fought over water –

Are you aware of what is happening  to our rivers in South Africa?
And do you know why it is a problem if sewerage and chemicals are allowed in to the water source?

Oh, it just goes to down to the sea and washes away.

If we allow engine oil and chemicals from factories into our water supply, they pollute and poison it.  Where do you think we will get clean fresh drinking water, if we keep poisoning our basic supplies?

Fish are already reported to be full of mercury, which will ultimately poison us.  Where does the mercury come from? From us, the humans.

Seeing  the Umvoti River, black with chemicals, and finding that many others rivers, The Duzi, the Umgeni… are also full of sewerage and chemical waste, brings despair.

But what can you do, as an ordinary individual? You can start with yourself. Do you throw old engine oil down the drain, use toxic housecleaners?  Do you know how many of your plastic earbuds end up on the beaches, presumably from the sewerage system?

Well…  You can start to clean up your own drains, your own waste water, use less water, save energy.

If you don’t, you may wake up one day soon to find that you have no clean water, and perhaps that will cause the mass end of humanity.

I am asking you to take up the challenge, (wherever in the world you are) share ideas with me, so that together we can each stop polluting our own small section of the environment?  And if everyone did it, what a difference would that make?

I would love you to sign up now on my blog and share your ideas.  I will send you free tips for going green, as my contribution to a cleaner earth for you and our children.

Let’s join together for cleaner water!

Beach Clean Up Day

Beach Clean 18 Sept 2010

Cleaning the Beaches

September 18 2010 was International Coastal Cleanup day, when every scrap of litter that is picked up is documented on Data Card which are then analysed – world wide.

We found an astounding amount of ear buds and plastic bottle tops, as well as the usual bait packets, plastic bottles, food packets.  And 5 toothbrushes, a loo seat and the top of a plastic swing bin.  All this on an unpopulated beach with very limited access!

Does anyone have an understanding of where ear buds come from – every beach now has a proliferation of ear bud plastic.  Have a look next time you go to the beach, and please pick them up.

I no longer collect shells on the beach, I collect litter.  What about getting into the habit of picking up litter on the beach, and making a game of it for your children too.
