Buffalo Bull

Buffalo Bull

Buffalo Bull

This big old buffalo bull was so close to the car that it was hard to fit him in the photo.  The old bulls get thrown out of the herd when they pass their sell-by date, and lurk alone in the wild.  They can be very cantankerous and very dangerous.  Buffalo is the one species above all other to respect – a wounded buffalo will lie in wait or stalk you, and make short work of grinding you into the dust.  I was glad to be in a motor vehicle at this distance to the old fellow.

Giraffe feeding her young

Giraffe

Giraffe

Something I have never seen before – a giraffe mother nursing her young.  They are so tall and can be quite ungainly.  I loved the tenderness of the mother towards her calf, despite having to bend down so far!

The calf was very hungry – head butting her mother to let the milk flow down!

Shopping in Ponta d’Ouro

Shopping in Ponta d'Ouro

This is the main street of Ponta d’Ouro, just over the South African border, in Mozambique.  It is accessed by 4×4 only, with a rabbit warren of dirt roads from the border post, and very few sign boards.  If the road wears out, you just start a new dirt track, and all roads eventually get you to the village!

There is a slightly more salubrious shopping area, but this one was charming and we could not buy the bizarre electrical adaptor I needed for my computer in the ‘smart’ part – we had to come shopping in the village.

Basic food is displayed in colourful array along with the traditional drink of bright red Spar Letta mixed with Rum.

Furniture is displayed in the open air, both upholstery and carpentry, you can get your tyre repaired if the repairman can be persuaded to wake from his post under the nearby tree.  All typical of rural Africa.
